The Earth Directorate (ED) is an administrative body tasked with coordinating between Earth and its colonies. It also serves as regulatory tribunal which regulate trade and resolve international and inter-corporate disputes. The organisation is also responsible for cataloging and licensing of star systems to various corporations.
History[]
The Earth Directorate was formed on Earth in the years following the Great War to regulate trade and arbitrate international, and inter-corporate disputes.[1][2] Between the Great War of the mid-21st century and the invention of the skip drive, theorists had disputed the power of the skip drive, but rather attributed the Earth Directorate's rise to power as being a pre-War entity, dominating the corporations, having been weakened by the costs of the Great War, with the drive giving them extra power over them.[3] By the 23rd century, the Directorate is also responsible for the cataloging and licensing of star systems to various corporations or corporate entities.[2]
At some point the ED sold Halcyon to the Halcyon Holdings Corporation.
The ending of The Outer Worlds leaves the status of the Earth Directorate vague. However, The Outer Worlds 2 shows that the Directorate does still exist, and has recently dispatched agents to the Arcadia colony in order investigate the rifts cutting off the colonies from one another.
