Background[]
Eva Chartrand is a doctor working for The Board on a solution to a looming crisis facing the Halcyon colony - the eventual starvation of the colonists, due to the lack of usable nutrients in the crops they brought from Earth. The Board allowed Chartrand to approach the problem from a different angle - adapting the human body to derive sustenance from the nutrients that are in the crops. Once a replicable success was found, the Board would rewire colonists' nuclein, allowing the next generation to eat and thrive off Halcyon crops.[1]
Chartrand originally headed up a team of scientists working on the same problem. She refused to experiment on the convicts or the unemployed, therefore her team had to experiment on themselves and, one by one, were placed in holding tanks as their experiments placed them in critical condition.[2]
