The Chimerist's Last Experiment is a faction quest in The Outer Worlds.
Synopsis[]
The evidence found in Cascadia and at HRS-1084 convinced Lilya Hagen that Dr. Eva Chartrand is at the center of an alien invasion conspiracy. She wants Chartrand killed for the good of humanity.
Dr. Chartrand is a Board-sponsored Chimerist - a scientist who manipulates the nuclein of plants and creatures from Earth to survive on colony worlds, and is not part of an alien conspiracy but a Board cover up.
Walkthrough[]
Go to Byzantium and travel to the Estates District. The home next to the stairs that was locked with no way to pick it is now accessible as you have acquired the proper key. Enter and walk to the kitchen in the back-right of the house. Access the terminal and unseal the Laboratory Access. The door in the very back will unseal. Walk through, go down the elevator, and there will be two more doors to walk through.
Once the second door is opened, Dr. Chartrand will immediately initiate conversation. The Stranger can tell her they have been sent by Lilya Hagen of SubLight Salvage to kill her. Dr. Chartrand will say she never heard of her. Then she will say the crops grown on Halcyon aren't nutrient enough for humans, thus the recurring plagues and famine all over the colony, and that her research is about recombining human nuclein to adapt it to the nutrients of Halcyon food. At the end she will say nobody would be able to continue her research if she dies and leaves her fate in the hands of the Stranger. At this point two choices can be made.
The Stranger could spare her letting her continue her research for the Board (this option increases Reputation with the Board), or ask her to work with Phineas Welles to help better mankind. She will not need convincing for either of these, but the Corporate Commander who guards will. If the Stranger has more positive Reputation with the Board than negative, they can bribe, Persuade (150) him into letting them go, or tell him they work for Adjutant Akande if they have completed at least one of her quests. Otherwise, if the Dumb or the last dialogue option is chosen, the UDL guards and the automechanichals will become hostile and the Stranger can either kill them gaining negative Reputation with the Board or run away.
If the Stranger decides to kill her, Dr. Chartrand, the UDL guards and the automechanicals will become hostile, and killing each of them results in a loss of reputation with the Board.
Afterwards, report back to Hagen on the Groundbreaker for either the reward and some ship decorations in the Captain's quarters or the dismissal from Sublight (along with a Reputation decrease), depending on whether or not Dr. Chartrand was killed.
Quest Stages[]
Notes[]
- If the Stranger asks Dr. Chartrand to work with Phineas Welles, he won't mention her at all and this choice has no impact in the Epilogue.
- If the Stranger has more Negative reputation than Positive with the Board and tells Dr. Chartrand to work with Phineas Welles, the UDL guard in her lab will lack the Bribe and Persuade (150) options to let them walk away, and will turn hostile. Dr. Chartrand will turn hostile as well, despite her agreeing to the Stranger's proposition.
- There is a workaround method that lets the Stranger kill Dr. Chartrand without turning the UDL guards and the automechanicals hostile. Choose to spare her letting her continue her research for the Board, convince the guard to let them go, go back near the elevator and shoot Dr. Chartrand in the head. The guards won't be alarmed by her sudden death and the Stranger can return to Lilya Hagen to bring her the good news without significant Board Reputation loss.
- If The Board is hostile to the Stranger with orders to Kill on Sight , you can tell Dr. Chartrand to work with Phineas , this leaves only the corporate troops + automechanicals hostile and Dr. Chartrand friendly.
- If the Stranger spares Dr. Chartrand, but has a "Revering" reputation with Sublight their overall Sublight reputation will remain "Revering" even after their dismissal causes a decrease in reputation.
