Sandbox pagesEdit

Hello, I've moved what was originally here to User:Gausroth/characters, as this is a space where messages are left by others. You can make as many sandboxes as you like by going to User:Gausroth and putting /Page title at the end of the title. Sakaratte - Talk to the catmin 18:52, October 28, 2019 (UTC)

Changing the Status Effects page from multiple tables to bullet points?Edit

I have been trying to use bullet points rather than tables when it would make the page more simplistic without losing information. You can see how I did it on this page I worked on; Modifications. Do you think the bullets work better than the tables? If you do, could I update Status effects to bullet points?

I still need to add the Applied By to the status effect and Icons will be added to the table as well. Not sure how a bullet list would look with icons.Gausroth (talk) 23:12, December 9, 2019 (UTC)

AdminEdit

From the discussions in Diacord, I get the impression you might be able to do more as an admin, considering your technical understanding of things. It does mean dealing with things like abuse filters, CSS and JavaScript, along with some community management.

Rather than just appoint you, I want to ask if you wants to take on the task of administrator, as it is a much broader role. Sakaratte - Talk to the catmin 14:43, December 23, 2019 (UTC)

I'm ok with CSS and JavaScript never dealt with abuse filters before. I'm willing to give it a go. Gausroth (talk) 15:09, December 23, 2019 (UTC)

EditingEdit

Hi, thank you for sending a message. I thought The Outer Worlds is kinda like Fallout, Mass Effect and Dragon Age and would receive the same love, but there are so many pages still empty on fandom and very badly structured. I really would like to see the pages more like mass effect and dragon age. They are very userfriendly, well at least in my opinion. At first I just wanted to help with filling the pages for locations like points of interest, but the more I see on fandom the more I dislike. Is there a way to 'design' it like Mass Effect and Dragon age? Like using colors that fits The Outer Worlds, instead of a copy past of Fallout. Sorry for being so direct, I hope I don't insult anyone, but I was just wondering. Smallshadow78 (talk) 17:43, February 4, 2020 (UTC)

Hi there Edit

Hi there,

thanks for the welcome.

Since I'm new to this Wiki, but gained some experiences with other Wikis over the years, it would be kind of You, to give me some advice from time to time, if I may do/write/place something, You do not completely agree with.

And since english isn't my first language, feel free, to check/prove and correct my posts.

Looking forward to a good cooperation

Discord and tables or vice versa :) Edit

Hi Gausroth,

realized, that you "destroyed" my precious first post on that Wiki :)

Seems, you are more in tables than text-based info.

First problem with this is - from my experience - you may need two columns to describe a creatures location: the first (maybe "Location (raw)" or sth like this) as done, for the planet/moon, the main area and so on, but there might be a second (not sortable) one useful (maybe "Location (fine)"), that may contain such info like "infront (or is it "in front"?, I never got this in english so far) of the ... to Cascadia" for i.e. Euryale and Stheno, since they are not AT the Cascadia Landing Pad ... peanuts, I know, but since I'm german, I like it very precisely :D

And second problem: it's a bit tricky, to set entries in a table linkable. In this special case it seems to me, you want to create separate Wiki-pages for each of that unique creatures, so it may be no problem here, but if you won't do separate pages, one may want to set a direct link to one of the listed things on a summary page like that ... ah, peanuts, let's talk about that, if it may be a real problem :) ... whoops, I checked my "linked" Chimera-entry on Hero's Last Stand, hm, with a table that short as it is in the moment, still no problem, but what if it "grows" ?

Discord: since it's a spoken chat and - as told - I'm not a native english speaker, it's really challenging to me, to follow an english, american or (worst :) scottish conversation, and I'm not really used to it ... so I won't join you there ... I may write you a note as done here :) ... hopes, this is not to inconvinient to you :)

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 08:55, March 18, 2020 (UTC)

ah, and sorry about the massive amount of smilies, but I like to smile :)

funny: when going to the "old" page "Named Monsters" after I had updated all links to Unique creatures, to delete this now useless page, I was a bit confused for a moment about not to be able to do so, since I'm Admin in some other Wikis and used to have this ability ... so here only the hint: you may delete this page :P

  • I'll delete the redirect later. If you prefer a section list over a table thats fine but detailed/precise information should reside in the creatures own page. However, I think it would be best, at least for now, to add a section on the main species for the unique variants. They probably do not have enough information to have their own pages. Though I think some are mentioned in logs. Gausroth (talk) 16:18, March 18, 2020 (UTC)

Deleted info Edit

Hi there,

since I don't know, how you manage such questions in this Wiki - as a message, like this or on the pages discussion - straight forward: checking the Hero's Last Stand, I realized, that you changed the Location-section from "the nearest fast travel ..." to sth else, and deleted the info, I added there.

Point 1: even if you refer only to the locations instead to the fast travel spots, the crashed gunship site appears really late in the monarchs storyline, so players at the beginning of monarchs storyline wouldn't be able to locate it this way

Point 2: I know that behavior by myself, so trust me, I don't want to offend you: I checked the Wikis editing history and realized, you (beside some drips of ink from WarMachineDD7 and Croix129) are the only really active editor on this Wiki for a "long" time ... so maybe you are a little bit possessive to this Wiki ? Just asking, because I'm not used, to find useful meant info instantly deleted.

So if you don't want me to do edits in this Wiki, tell it. Wouldn't be a problem, I would use this Wiki as source for info in the future nevertheless, but wouldn't share my "investigations" (as big or small they are :) and spare them on my computer.

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 10:54, March 18, 2020 (UTC)

oops, I see, while I was writing this post, you answered to that one above ... but I'm still interested in your answer on this one :) ... but sorry for the doubling

  • Sorry, now that you mention it I think I am getting a bit obsessive with the wiki. It's been a while since talking with a new editor. Please continue editing and I'll rework you hero's last stand location edits into the page. My thinking was if they don't know where the gunship crash site is they would open that. Also I want to add map snippets to each location just haven't gotten around to it. Gausroth (talk) 16:19, March 18, 2020 (UTC)

Hi there,

if one searches for info about for instance Hero's Last Stand, I think, it's better to collect all available info to this point on the matching page, instead of leading him on a kind of shred hunt ... means more work on each page, but a more convinient experience to any visitor.

But on the other hand, you may be right in sending him to other pages of this wiki, kind of exploring, not really sure.

From my own POV I think, if one searches info while playing the game, it may be better, to find the info concentrated on one spot, instead one bit here, another there ... as said, not sure about, both views may have its advantages.

Cheers

Atm I've read your post on my talk page: my changing under my favorite pages was not meant to pester you, but for me to remember my first "own" new page on this wiki ... the sometimes wrong capitalization comes from my german language roots: if you can touch or smell or taste or hear or think on it, write it with a capital :) ... may happen some more times, but I always try to remember the english/american rules of writing (and sometimes may fail :)

Since I didn't find that policies on the first attempt, now I did read them and try to follow :)

To me the Gunship crash site becomes available immediately at the end of the Radio Free Monarch quest, when looking up from the terminal where the transmitter were activated, seeing that gunship crashing behind the hills and got questioned by Hiram and my companions, if I had seen it too. (it's really confusing to me {as a german}: gunship, crash, site, radio, and monarch ... all nouns "has" to be written with a capital, free is an adjective and "has" to be written with a lowercase ... english language is sooo illogical, sooo complicated ... instead of german: straight logic and such easy :)

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 11:34, March 19, 2020 (UTC)

  • Some of the pages where created with improper capitalization and not all have been fixed. A rule of thumb in English is all proper nouns are capitalized and the first word of a sentence is capitalized. Gausroth (talk) 19:38, March 19, 2020 (UTC)

Delete Category:Characters on Sprat Edit

Hi Gausroth,

I've tried to delete the - in my opinion - not matching Category:Characters from Sprat (after adding Category:Creatures), but after saving the page it's still there.

And not sure, if the Template Navbox:Characters should be removed too.

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 11:45, March 21, 2020 (UTC)

  • it was being added because the character navbox was being used. I updated the page to use the creature navbox.

2 new map images with (maybe) wrong file names Edit

Hi there,

I've added 2 new map images for Emerald Vale, they are as far only used at Emerald Vale and Emerald Vale/map.

Since I like to do map images, but rather seldom do other images, the schematics for storing thus on my computer is like in the first 2 images "Game - Area - version ...". When using this first 2 images on the related pages, I realized, that there is the therm "Map of" missed in the files names. So I uploaded them a second time ... but then I realized, that the leading game-descriptor might be useless inside this special Wiki. Instead of uploading them a third time (because I'm not able to rename or delete the image-files on the server), I leave it to You :)

Thanks

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 21:23, March 22, 2020 (UTC)

  • Most regions have a map image. I would use the name that current one has and if there is no map image use RegionName_map.png Gausroth (talk) 01:40, March 23, 2020 (UTC)
  • Hi Gausroth,
please do me a favour and delete the following 4 images, since I uploaded this images with new names a third time, deleted all categories from the images pages and set all links to the 2 new images:
The Outer Worlds - Emerald Vale (small) clean.png
The Outer Worlds - Map of Emerald Vale (small) clean.png
The Outer Worlds - Emerald Vale (small) complete.png
The Outer Worlds - Map of Emerald Vale (small) complete.png
This is only, because I'm not able to delete this images myself. Thanks.
Cheers

Answer on Maps Edit

Hi Gausroth,

I fear, this is a typical case for my lack of knowledge in english language.

If I understand, you ask about only the graphics ... the "trick" is, to take the first series of screenshots as early as possible. So you get images with a minimum effort for cleaning ... often it is nessessary to play especially the first moves into a new region several times, to avoid coverages by the players or any objective marks (or to get enough screenshots with enough different coverages, to exchange this parts of the images ... only time consuming and diligence work :)

For this Emerald Vale Maps I had to take 5 horizontal stripes, since the ingame map-monitor is surrounded with "shady smear" on all edges (Windows PC version).

This method with the stripes, makes it "easy" to move the avatar (and its sign on the map) in an area outside the atm taken stripe, and to change the active mission/quest, to move the active objective marks outside this stripe.

For the "clean" version of the map, I had to take only one additional small snippet (I called it "patch" from its function for the map) from a far later in the game taken screenshot, to cover the first objective mark, because there were no other quests, to move this sign away from the taken stripe.

For the "complete" map it took 3 patches: first one to "create" the start point, second one to insert the first (crash)landing position of the Unreliable and the third one (maybe avoidable) to cover a messed portion of a seam between two of the 5 stripes ... and no, I won't tell you where :)

Since I do game maps for many years, I got a lot of experience ... to be honest, it's often only about covering the failed details :) ... to many little tricks, to tell for short ... mostly I use only three graphics programs: (don't laugh) Paint, IrfanView and Gimp ... and lots of handicraft ... and it's still fun :)

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 21:30, March 25, 2020 (UTC)

... and it helps, to take all the map screenshots while using keyboard/mouse instead of a gamepad (Windows PC version of the game) to avoid that circle-like center sign ... unless you want to use this sign somewhere (like the start point on the Emerald Vale map) Paladin Aladin (talk) 06:31, April 6, 2020 (UTC)

... and always keep some of the side-quests for at least 2 locations, so you keep the ability to switch the current quest and so to move the objective sign(s) on the map from or to the Unreliable Paladin Aladin (talk) 17:10, April 6, 2020 (UTC)

Gigantes.png Edit

Hi there,

today I uploaded a screenshot of Gigantes and didn't check, the names of maybe exististing and used pictures. And so - it seems to me - I accidentaly chosed exactly the same name, like of an existing picture ... but I got no warning during the upload or such - sorry. I realized it first, when I got on the fresh uploaded image the message, it would be used on the Gigantes-page.

Handling of categories in this Wiki Edit

Hi Gausroth,

how is the handling of giving (or giving not) for instance map images to different categories in this Wiki?

My question is especially, because the Category:Map images is a sub to the Category:Location images, so it makes no sense to give a map image to the Category:Location images in addition to the matching Category:Map images ... BUT: since on the maps are different locations in different regions are displayed, it might be useful to add for an instance a map image of Edgewater additional to the categories of Edgewater, AND Emerald Vale, AND Terra 2, AND Halcyon ... AND maybe to Spacer's Choice or so, since they owned this entire city ... you see my "problem" ? Might need some advice :)

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 14:38, March 28, 2020 (UTC)

  • Well all Edgewater maps and images should reside in and only in an Edgewater image category. The Edgewater image category should only be attached to the Edgewater category and Emerald Vale images category. This isn't how it is now but I think if all the images are attached to a category and all of the parent categories, the top parent category would be riddled with to many images. Gausroth (talk) 00:43, March 30, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oookay, this concerns me a bit, since I was very sure that the given assignment of all map images at least to the "Category:Map images" is very right, since one can sort/catch them all by that. If each map image is only (!) assigned to the category of the location it displays, this sorting wouldn't be possible in the future. BTW, did you read my last post under 2 map images ...? Paladin Aladin (talk) 08:05, March 30, 2020 (UTC)
  • Your right, they should also be in the main map category. so a Category:Map images and Category:Edgewater images or just Category:Edgewater. But I adding them to say Category:Emerald Vale images or Category:Emerald Vale would be overkill. Gausroth (talk) 15:45, March 30, 2020 (UTC)
  • Therefore you may add the whole "Category:Edgewater" (that may or may not include a "Category:Edwater images") as a whole to the "Category:Emerald Vale" ... not the single elements of the sub-categories. So that upper categories stay realtively clean with not to much entries ... structured ... so to say: structured by the location->area->region->planet/moon->starsystem ... and in addition structured by function like for an instance "Category:Map images" and "Category:Maps" or "Category:Locations/maps" ... I like it :). Maybe one (you?) may create a separate sandbox-page only to display that whole categories nomenclature for orientation ... to be (slightly) expanded, if in need. Paladin Aladin (talk) 20:31, March 30, 2020 (UTC)
  • Category:Edgewater should be in Category:Emerald Vale. Though I have not looked at most of the categories to see if they are in proper sequence. I just added Edgewater to Category:Emerald Vale. I bet most if not all locations have their categories wrong.Gausroth (talk) 02:57, March 31, 2020 (UTC)

Messages left in terminals are logs ? Edit

since I try to work me through the geothermal power plant map, I searched for a Wiki-page, where I can find messages like the Hastily-written note from Chester Higgins (this one I found on Logs), which kinda guides the player towards some quest objectives. But since there are a bunch of messages, left behind in terminals, like File 01 from Higgins in the Receptionists Terminal or the Personal Log 098 from the Geothermal Security Chief S. Tanaka in the terminal in his office, my question is, if you may eventually add them to the Logs-page, since then I would add links there into my imagemaps on the GPP-maps-page ... sorry about my crude english ... it's difficult for me, to describe this :) Paladin Aladin (talk) 15:26, March 31, 2020 (UTC)

  • Logs are the ones that appear in the log section of the codex in-game. Terminals do not so no they will not be added to the log page or category. However, there has been a few conversations regarding how to handle the terminals on the discord. The plan is to have a page per terminal with a main terminal page as a hub and a terminal category. Checking the first 3 floors of Geothermal power plant/map Edit

Hi Gausroth,

since I don't know, how to invite you into a Live Chat here on Wiki, I have to write you another message: could you please check my first 3 floors of the interactive Geothermal power plant/map ... maybe you have some suggestions, what to change/make better or to add?

Cheers

Paladin Aladin (talk) 18:43, March 31, 2020 (UTC)

one thing comes to my mind after writing that above: for instance that hatched areas in a map are not belonging to the floor of the map, but to the floor beneath ... so it might be clever to add an imagemap, which tells that these areas are belonging to the next lower floor ...

Paladin Aladin (talk) 18:53, March 31, 2020 (UTC)

  • I think you should use different icons for terminals, quest items and the like. I do like that they are on the map though. They do seem to take a while to load however. For the difference in floor. Take a look at the Groundbreaker map. The different floors are darker, try using the same colors as that. Gausroth (talk) 19:56, March 31, 2020 (UTC)
  • As I wrote in my images descriptions, my screenshots are all from the Windows PC version of the game ... maybe that ones for the Groundbreaker are from another system and that's the reason for different color-schemes? I could change that (original) diagonal stripes hatched to a darker full color, like on that Groundbreaker maps. But there are still the thoughts about additional imagemaps ... maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow. The different icons for terminals, quest items a.s.o might be a problem, since in that Windows version there is eiter the rectangular sign for a POI or the Google-like topdown green drop. And I don't know of any other icons used in the game. Paladin Aladin (talk) 21:26, March 31, 2020 (UTC)
o.k., checked the Groundbreaker maps a bit closer, and they are exactly like mine, but there are only the much lower floors in that darker full color, that areas only one floor beneath are alike with that diagonal stripe hatched. Paladin Aladin (talk) 21:48, March 31, 2020 (UTC)
  • If that is how it is in-game then I would leave as is. 107.77.206.220 23:08, March 31, 2020 (UTC)
