Why Call Them Back From Retirement? is a side quest in The Outer Worlds.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
Walkthrough[edit | edit source]
First, begin by accepting the quest from Hortense, who will give you a key necessary for the quest. Then follow the quest marker and proceed to the terminal that controls the door to the Early Retirement District.
After the zone transition, go forward, interact with another terminal and take the elevator. After you finally arrive at the bottom of the elevator, you'll be greeted with a gritty looking basement with several hostile Retirement Facilitation Drones, as well as many corpses of the retirees. It turns out their idea of 'early retirement' is simply murder. Destroy the automechanicals or, if you have Hack 65, you can sneak to the terminal on the opposite side of the basement and disable them. After you destroyed or disabled the automechanicals, use the terminal to unlock the maintenance hatch.
After the zone transition, you'll be in the Maintenance Tunnels. If you didn't disable them, there will be some more hostile automechanicals in the next room, as well as a locked door that requires Lockpick 65. You can escape through the barred door in the room on the right and then proceeding to an elevator back to the surface.
Return to Hortense and deliver the news. You can either tell her the truth about the Early Retirement Program (gains Board negative reputation) and then Persuade (100) or Intimidate (65) her into rewarding you more bits. One can also Lie (40) to her that the Retirement District is a paradise and encourage her to see for herself, with predictable consequences (gains Board positive reputation).

Companion reactions[edit | edit source]
If the character lies to Hortense about the Retirement District:
- Nyoka: "Poor thing's just ignorant. Can't say as I'm thrilled to be sending her off".
- Parvati Holcomb: "I oughta feel more conflicted about this."
Notes[edit | edit source]
- Since you'll escape through the Maintenance Tunnels, it may be convenient to get the Cupid of the Laboratory task from Giles Molina before heading to the Early Retirement District. This way you can complete both quests in one go.
